Financial Times, in its article entitled "Malaysian Consumers Start 2017 On Pessimistic Note" on January 4, 2017, predicts the 14th General Election that will be held in the third quarter of this year, with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak being on track to win the election.
"We expect Najib will win the next general election" the Financial Times predicts
"We expect Mr Najib to win the next general election. The main opposition party, Pakatan Harapan, is attempting to reach a deal with the Islamist party PAS to avoid dividing the votes against BN. We expect these negotiations to fail, much to Mr Najib’s advantage" wrote the Financial Times
While another influential economic magazine The Economist, through The Economist Intelligent Unit, predicted that Barisan National are in good condition to win the next general election.
"Given the fragmented opposition, made up of three separate groups, the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition appears well placed to win the next election whenever it is held," The Economist Intelligence Unit predicts.
The Economist said the split in the opposition provides advantage to BN. The Economist also predicted that the Malaysia’s economy will grow at 4.5% until 2021.
According to the Financial Times research team, Najib will also benefit from the expected failure regarding the talk between PAS and Pakatan Harapan.
Financial Times also said;
"We expect Malaysia’s economy to grow between 4.4 percent and 4.7 percent in 2017, an increase from an estimated 4.2 percent this year," Financial Times said.
The Economist forecasts of election results in Malaysia is not a new thing. On February 3, 2013, The Economist Intelligence Unit also predicted the Barisan Nasional win in GE13.
Financial Times through its journalist, Jeremy Grant, had interviewed Dato Seri Najib on March 28, 2013 prior to GE13. Financial Times at the time agreed with the forecast that Barisan Nasional will win in GE13.
Of course, this time, the research conducted by the Financial Times and The Economist is also based on a political background, figures and their experience with previous Malaysian elections.
The news predicting the victory is of value. Of course the news regarding the victory is not a wonderful news to the ears of the supporters and bigots of Mahathir and the opposition coalition.
How would they digest this prediction? Accusing the Financial Times and The Economist of ‘makan dedak’?
The fact is, BN is expected to win and Malaysia’s economy is projected to be in good condition. Refutes entirely the opposition’s wishful thinking of conquering Putrajaya and accusations that the country is on the path of bankruptcy. The opposition will remain with no issue after the forecast by the Financial Times and The Economist.
